The first Way of St James in history

The Camino Primitivo covers around 320 km from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela. It follows the route taken by King Alfonso II of Asturias in the 9th century to visit the newly discovered tomb of the Apostle, making it the oldest Way of St James of them all.

It crosses the Asturian mountains over demanding passes (Puerto del Palo, Acebo) before entering Galicia at A Fonsagrada and joining the French Way at Melide for the final stretch into the city. Along with the Camino del Norte, it's the toughest of the major Caminos: plenty of elevation gain, dramatic wild scenery, and far fewer pilgrims than the French Way.
